The "Coolest" of Kirkland New Year's Day Events
14th Annual "Unofficial" Polar Bear Plunge
25 Lakeshore Plaza
The frostiest, goofiest way to welcome 2016 in Eastside Seattle, our 14th Annual "Unofficial" Polar Bear Plunge draws hundreds of revelers to the shores of Lake Washington for a chilly dip in the water on New Year's Day. Whether you had a low-key New Year's Eve in Kirkland or need a sure-fire cure for having too much fun, there's no better way to spend the day than donning a swimsuit and joining the silly celebration. Of course, you'll also want to pack a towel, sandals, warm clothes, and a camera.
What's this "Unofficial" Business?
The City of Kirkland hosted the Polar Bear Plunge until 2009, after which the wild event persisted thanks to the fun-loving nature of its annual participants. Their brave desire to swim in 47-degree water has kept the party going every year since, though no group or organization officially sanctions the event. In other words, take the Plunge at your own risk!
Costume Contest & Hot Cocoa
Arrive at Marina Park around 12:30 pm to join in pre-swim warm-ups at 12:45 pm, followed by the Costume Contest at 12:55 pm. Past winners have received such treasures as limited edition "I Survived the Kirkland Polar Bear Plunge" mugs, so be sure to dust off your kilt, wigs, coconut bra, and dress in your over-the-top finest. The plunge takes place at 1 pm sharp, followed by free hot cocoa from The Grape Choice wine shop.
Warm-Up in Your Suite, Just 2 Blocks Away
